What to Actually Look For in a Pet Insurance Plan
Pet insurance has gone from niche to mainstream over the last decade, and most carriers now offer it alongside their auto and home lines. But pet plans vary more than you'd expect. Here's a short framework for choosing one that fits your pet, not just the brochure.
Three Plan Types
- Accident-only. Cheapest. Covers things like broken bones, swallowed objects, or a hit-and-run. Doesn't cover illness or routine care.
- Accident and illness. The most common middle tier. Covers both, but usually excludes pre-existing conditions and routine wellness.
- Accident, illness, and wellness. Adds vaccines, dental cleanings, annual exams. Costs more but spreads predictable expenses across the year.
Numbers to Pay Attention To
The three numbers that actually decide what a plan costs you:
- Annual deductible. $250 to $1,000 typical. Higher deductibles drop the monthly premium.
- Reimbursement percentage. Usually 70%, 80%, or 90%. After your deductible, the plan reimburses this share of qualifying costs.
- Annual maximum. Some plans have a cap (like $5,000 or $10,000 per year). Others are unlimited. For a serious accident or chronic illness, the cap is what matters.
Watch the Exclusions
Most pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, breed-specific hereditary conditions (unless added), or routine grooming. Read the actual policy, not just the website summary. Hereditary exclusions in particular trip up owners of breeds prone to specific conditions: hip dysplasia in larger dogs, heart issues in some cat breeds.
Best Time to Enroll
Earlier is almost always better. A condition that develops at age six but had no symptoms at age three was not pre-existing if you enrolled at three. A condition diagnosed before you signed up almost always is. Younger pets also have lower premiums, locked in when they enroll.
